Alabama Iota’s William A.B. Dowell Receives SAE’s 171st Distinguished Service Award

Recognizing a lifetime of service, loyalty, and leadership to the Fraternity, the Distinguished Service Award is the highest individual honor a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon may receive. It is reserved for brothers whose actions reflect a deep understanding of the Fraternity’s teachings, a steadfast commitment to its future, and a lifetime of service that strengthens SAE for generations to come.

Among Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s more than 355,000 initiated members, only 171 have received the Distinguished Service Award, representing just 0.00048 of all members in the history of the Fraternity. William A.B. Dowell (Birmingham-Southern ’78) now joins that distinguished group as the 171st recipient, recognized for decades of meaningful service and for the lasting impact of his leadership at the chapter, province, and national levels.

“Receiving the Distinguished Service Award places Bill Dowell among the rarest company in our Fraternity’s history,” said Steve Mitchell, Chief Executive Officer and Eminent Supreme Recorder. “For decades, Bill has exemplified what dedication to SAE looks like, not only through his service as a chapter leader, advisor, Province Archon, Leadership School faculty member, and member of the Supreme Council, but through his enduring commitment to the future of our Fraternity. His vision in founding the SAE Foundation Investment Commission helped strengthen the Foundation’s long-term financial position and created a legacy that continues to benefit generations of brothers. This recognition is long overdue, and on behalf of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, I am proud to celebrate Bill’s extraordinary service, leadership, and devotion to our organization.”

Dowell’s legacy is defined by both enduring service and strategic vision. His contributions have not only shaped the experience of countless brothers but also helped strengthen the long-term financial future of the SAE Foundation and the Fraternity as a whole. As founder of the SAE Foundation Investment Commission, Dowell helped establish a framework for stewardship that continues to serve the organization today.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon proudly congratulates William A.B. Dowell on receiving the 171st Distinguished Service Award and thanks him for the lasting legacy he has built.

On June 24th, 2026, William A.B. Dowell became the 171st recepient of the Distinguished Service Award surrounded in celebration by SAE brothers, family and friends.

Loyalty is one of the cardinal virtues that builds Fraternity. Loyalty implies dedication and steadfast commitment, no matter the circumstances. Even during the darkest hours, loyalty is resolute and unwavering. It is a testament of character that overly implies standing by something, no matter what, no matter when. Simply put, loyalty is a bond that cannot be broken. You are the definition of loyalty, and you have been throughout your life.

Your loyalty and subsequent drive to help others began to show while you were an undergraduate. You held several positions for your chapter, including Eminent Warden, House Manager, Recruitment Chairman, and New Member Educator. You also received collegiate-level awards that recognized your leadership and the respect you had already earned at such a young age. The collegiate experience shaped how you view life and how you treat people, both of which you’ve never strayed far from.

For over 20 years, you served as your chapter’s Advisor, as well as its Alumni Association President. Like many other SAE leaders, serving just your chapter was not enough. There were so many other brothers that you wanted to connect with beyond your school. So, you started volunteering for your province as its Treasurer and ultimately served as Province Archon. You were also a faculty member at Leadership School for the better part of a decade, personifying and passing down what it means to be loyal for multiple generations of True Gentlemen.

Due to your impressive tenure of support, your undergraduate chapter was a recipient of the John O. Moseley Award for Fraternity Zeal. Not many chapters have one. Because of your guidance, your chapter has received three.

Professionally, you ventured into financial services and eventually formed your own firm, which has been quite successful. In addition to guiding thousands of clients to financial independence, you have held various leadership roles in financial trade organizations and affiliated associations. Most notably, you’ve established yourself as a premier investment executive, a leader in fundraising strategies and campaigns.

Your financial expertise expanded your impact on the Fraternity—not only at the local and regional levels, but nationally as well. As a former SAE Foundation Trustee and the founder of the SAE Foundation Investment Commission, you have played a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s long-term financial future. Even today, through your continued service on the Investment Commission, your guidance helps safeguard the SAE Foundation’s future. Your loyalty is reflected not only in your commitment to SAE but in the legacy you have helped build for those who will follow.

You have also served on the Supreme Council, first as Eminent Supreme Chronicler and later as Eminent Supreme Herald. For a lifetime of leadership, mentorship, and financial acumen, the Fraternity has already recognized you with the Merit Key Award.

Accordingly, the Supreme Council of Sigma Alpha Epsilon awards you, William A.B. Dowell, the 171st Distinguished Service Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a member of our Beloved Fraternity, granted on the 24th day of June in the year 2026.
