Recognition of achievement and dedication to the Fraternity is important. Members who have distinguished themselves on various levels of the Fraternity or within their professions bring honor not only to themselves, but also to Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Our organization realizes the value in acknowledging exceptional service, and the presentation of an award of recognition is a primary way to show that appreciation.

The awards and certificates described in this form are for individual members. Individuals, chapters, alumni, provinces, and others are encouraged to nominate alumni for these honors. All awards are processed by the Fraternity Service Center.

Which Award will be presented?*

The SAE Foundation Impact Award

The SAE Foundation Impact Award aims to inspire a culture of mentoring and encourage the recognition of mentors as vital catalysts for personal and professional growth. Requirements: The recipient must meet the following criteria: Impact, Commitment, Empowerment, Leadership, and Innovation (more information on these categories can be found at the link below). Nomination: Any alumnus who has mentored another brother may be nominated, with a detailed description included. Approval: This award will be reviewed and approved by members of the Foundation staff, based on the guidelines listed. Application: The Impact award has it's own submission form. The William McKinley Outstanding Achievement Award

The William McKinley Outstanding Achievement Award embodies commitment, perseverance, leadership, and service to others. These virtues were exemplified by Brother William McKinley (Mount Union 1869), the 25th President of the United States. Like McKinley, whose leadership and service to our nation left a lasting legacy, recipients achievements reflect the highest ideals of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and serve as an inspiration to all its members.

The Order Of The Violet

The Order of the Violet recognizes outstanding commitment and support of the Fraternity by the spouse or significant other of an alumnus or collegiate member over an extended period of time.

The Order Of DeVotie

The Order of DeVotie is presented to an collegiate or alumni member for recognition of proficiency in the Ritual of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. This does not necessarily require memorization of the Fraternity’s Ritual. This honor encourages undergraduate participation and excellence in the use of our Ritual at all appropriate occasions as well as to recognize alumni members for their volunteer service and commitment to promote proper usage of our Ritual at the chapter level. Consideration for the award shall be given upon proper nomination for the award.

The Order Of The Phoenix

The Order of the Phoenix is one of the highest levels of recognition that an undergraduate member can receive. It can only be awarded to a member while he is still an undergraduate member. The purpose of this award is to recognize outstanding commitment and loyalty to the Fraternity by a collegiate brother.

The Order Of The Lion

The Order of the Lion recognizes outstanding commitment and loyalty to the Fraternity by an alumnus.

The Order Of Minerva

The Order of Minerva recognizes outstanding commitment and loyalty to the Fraternity by an alumnus over an extended period of time on various Fraternity levels.

Shield of Brotherhood

The Shield of Brotherhood recognizes a brother who consistently excels in voluntary commitment and service for the Fraternity.

The Merit Key

The second highest award an individual alumnus can receive, the Merit Key recognizes an alumnus who has demonstrated significant service and loyalty to the Fraternity on combined levels for an extended period of time.

The Distinguished Service Award

The Distinguished Service Award, created in 1946, is the highest individual award a member may receive. It recognizes a lifetime of service and loyalty to the Fraternity. Nominees must have demonstrated outstanding loyalty and dedication to the Fraternity for many years that distinguished themselves as a member deserving recognition above all others. Their actions exhibit a deep understanding of the Fraternity’s teachings, adherence to Fraternity Laws, attention to the promotion of its welfare and exemplary conduct that guards well its honor and high standing.

Certificate of Appreciation

Certificates of Appreciation are to acknowledge special service to the Fraternity on any level either by a member or non-member. Recipients may be nominated by any individual or governing body, with approval and presentation being given by any governing body.

Anniversary Certificate

The Anniversary Membership Certificate aims to mark a member’s milestone anniversary years. Certificates are available upon the member achieving their respective anniversary date. They are traditionally presented at Founders Day events or at other appropriate times by a Chapter Collegiate or Alumni Association. However, any member may request an anniversary certificate.

How can I determine a brother's eligibility for an award?

Award eligibility is based on a brother’s service to the Fraternity, standing within SAE, and previously received recognition awards. Awards must be earned in a specific order. For example, a brother must receive the Order of the Lion before the Order of Minerva, and the Order of Minerva before the Shield of Brotherhood.

We are currently developing a way to view award eligibility through the SAE Portal. In the meantime, please contact awards@sae.net, and our staff will review our records and help determine eligibility.

What if I don't know which award is appropriate?

If you’re unsure which award best fits an individual’s service, contact awards@sae.net before submitting a nomination. Our staff can review Fraternity records, verify eligibility, and help identify the most appropriate recognition.

If you submit a nomination for an award for which the individual is not eligible, our team will contact you before processing your order.

How far in advance should I submit an award nomination?

We recommend submitting nominations at least 14 business days before your desired presentation date. This allows adequate time for eligibility verification, award production, shipping, and any necessary follow-up questions.

Which awards require review for eligibility?

All award nominations are reviewed by staff to verify eligibility and ensure the nominee is in good standing with the Fraternity.

Additional review is required for certain awards:
- Shield of Brotherhood – Supreme Council
- Merit Key – Supreme Council
- William McKinley Outstanding Achievement Award – Supreme Council
- Distinguished Service Award (DSA) – Submit to ESR Steve Mitchell via email (smitchell@sae.net) *This award is typically brought to attention on behalf of The Supreme Council

Who can nominate someone for a recognition award?

Anyone may submit a nomination. We encourage brothers, chapters, and alumni associations to recognize individuals whose service and achievements deserve acknowledgment.

What if I'm having trouble with the nomination form?

If you encounter an error while submitting a nomination, please email awards@sae.net and include a screenshot of the issue, if possible. Our staff can assist with processing your nomination and resolving any technical problems.

When is a good time to present an award?

Awards may be presented whenever it is most meaningful for the recipient. While many awards are presented during Founders’ Day celebrations, alumni events, chapter anniversaries, or other special occasions, they can also be mailed directly to an individual if no event is planned.

What happens after I submit a nomination?

Once your nomination is submitted, our team will review it to verify eligibility and ensure all required information has been provided. If additional details are needed, we will contact you directly.

If everything is in order, the nomination will be sent to our printing partner for production. After the award is produced, it will be shipped to the address provided on the nomination form. Most awards arrive within a few days of shipment. Expedited shipping is also available for purchase through the nomination form if you need your award sooner.
