Through friendship, scholarship, leadership, and service, SAE finds men with impeccable character and helps them achieve their full potential, letting them rise up to face every challenge placed before them—today and tomorrow. We achieve this by grooming our members to become True Gentlemen.
The True Gentleman is the man whose conduct proceeds from good will and an acute sense of propriety, and whose self-control is equal to all emergencies; who does not make the poor man conscious of his poverty, the obscure man of his obscurity, or any man of his inferiority or deformity; who is himself humbled if necessity compels him to humble another; who does not flatter wealth, cringe before power, or boast of his own possessions or achievements; who speaks with frankness but always with sincerity and sympathy; whose deed follows his word; who thinks of the rights and feelings of others, rather than his own; and who appears well in any company, a man with whom honor is sacred and virtue safe.

Nearly 40 years ago, in 1986, the Supreme Council adopted the first official set of Risk Management Policies and implemented them throughout the Realm. In the early 2000s, the original SAE Risk Management Program was revised, updated, and renamed “Minerva’s Shield”.
Twenty years later, Sigma Alpha Epsilon remains committed to being the leader in Risk Management Practices in the Fraternal community. The well-being of our members, guests, and their respective communities remains a top priority for our organization. As such, the fraternity will continue to develop and implement a robust risk management program to evaluate and minimize risk proactively and further protect our organization and its members across the realm.
The objective of this program is to optimize and standardize our risk management process to ensure proper controls are in place and instill confidence in our members and stakeholders.
The aspirational outcomes of this program include:
– To establish a mindset in our members that focuses on prevention
– To foster a culture of health and wellness that benefits our members and the Fraternity as a whole.
– To address the root cause of health and safety issues
– To pave the way for a more secure and prosperous future for our Fraternity.
Working with experienced professionals in risk management, insurance, and various other industry experts, the Fraternity will develop and fully implement a vision, strategy, and plan for risk management. The Fraternity is committed to changing any systems, structures, and/or policies that don’t support this transformational vision to anchor new approaches to enhance the organizational culture. This change will include appropriate education for members, volunteers, and staff, which will include monitoring outcomes to ensure effectiveness and to track progress to continually raise the bar on performance and expectations. Risk Management is the responsibility of everyone associated with Sigma Alpha Epsilon and should be the primary consideration in everything we do as an organization.
