Our Mission
Advancing the highest standards of friendship, scholarship, leadership, and service for our members throughout life.
Driven by our values
Friendship
Friendship is important to the fraternity experience and also includes the idea of “brotherhood.” The social connections you make with each other through SAE allow you to create memories and friendships that last a lifetime.
Scholarship
Scholarship is the purpose and forefront of the higher education experience. SAE recognizes that you are students first, and we want our chapters to do everything they can to help you achieve your scholastic goals.
Leadership
When it comes to leadership, the fraternity wants all members to become leaders in their own way. Whether it’s allowing you to serve in a position, being a part of a committee, or helping execute an event, SAE wants to equip you with the skills and tools to be a leader.
Service
Service is integral to the fraternity experience. Through our national service partners and your local community organizations, the opportunity to serve those in need is one that Sigma Alpha Epsilon is honored to orchestrate.
SAE’s Statement on Risk Management
Sigma Alpha Epsilon is committed to being the leader in Risk Management Practices in the Fraternal community. The well-being of our members, guests, and their respective communities is top priority for our organization. As such, the fraternity will continue to develop and implement a robust risk management program to evaluate and minimize risk proactively and further protect our organization and its members across the realm.
The objective of this program is to optimize and standardize our risk management process to ensure proper controls are in place and instill confidence in our members and stakeholders. The aspirational outcomes of this program include:
- To establish a mindset in our members that focuses on prevention
- To foster a culture of health and wellness that benefits our members and the Fraternity as a whole.
- To address the root cause of health and safety issues
- To pave the way for a more secure and prosperous future for our Fraternity.
Working with experienced professionals in risk management, insurance, and various other industry experts, the Fraternity will develop and fully implement a vision, strategy, and plan for risk management. The Fraternity is committed to changing any systems, structures, and/or policies that don’t support this transformational vision to anchor new approaches to enhance the organizational culture. This change will include appropriate education for members, volunteers, and staff, which will include monitoring outcomes to ensure effectiveness and to track progress to continually raise the bar on performance and expectations. Risk Management is the responsibility of everyone associated with Sigma Alpha Epsilon and should be the primary consideration in everything we do as an organization.
Health & Safety Policies
Minerva's Shield
Equally as important as the Fraternity Laws is our official health-and-safety guide, which details expectations, protocol, and crisis procedures that all members are expected to understand and follow. Sigma Alpha Epsilon maintains a zero-tolerance policy for behaviors and actions that either violate our regulations or deviate from our creed and values.
Amnesty Policy
The Fraternity’s Amnesty Program provides a chapter with the opportunity to admit that it has violated Fraternity Laws policies and avoid being sanctioned by the Fraternity. In lieu of sanctions, the chapter must agree to enter into an amnesty action planning process where it agrees to comply with Fraternity Laws and policies.
Good Samaritan Policy
The Good Samaritan Policy encourages members to take immediate action when someone’s health or safety is at risk. It ensures members can seek medical assistance without fear of discipline, reinforcing that doing the right thing always comes first.
Question, Persuade, Refer
QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. This program aims to equip participants with the skills to recognize signs of crisis, respond to someone in crisis, and how to get help and save a life.
SAE provides the Online QPR Gatekeeper Training, a self-paced online module, to all collegiate members. It is interactive and taught in a clear, concise format using the latest in educational technology and practices. The course takes approximately one hour to complete.
We are committed to hazing prevention
SAE does not tolerate hazing in any form. Hazing is illegal, morally wrong, and conduct unbecoming of a True Gentleman that contradicts the founding precepts, principles, and mission of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. SAE has partnered with RealResponse, a confidential platform designed to enhance safety and accountability by providing members and guests with an anonymous way to report emergencies, crises, or general concerns. Members can submit reports by making calls or sending text messages directly to 1-(888)-464-1856, or by contacting the National Anti-Hazing Hotline at 1-(888)-NOT-HAZE (1-(888)-668-4293).
Birches Health
Birches Health and SAE have partnered to offer custom resources and treatment options from licensed, specially trained counselors for all members and alumni. Counseling can be covered by insurance and is available from the comfort of home through teletherapy.
