EVANSTON, IL – The Supreme Council has added two additional requirements to Minerva's Shield, our risk-management manual and program, which become effective immediately. These changes come as a proactive measure following recent injuries at Sigma Alpha Epsilon’s and other national fraternities’ chapter events. It is important for every member, every adviser and every house-corporation member to understand these additions.
On page 35, under “What Your Event Should Avoid” for the section on Event Planning, the following guidelines will join the other guidelines:
12. Aside from simple party decorations, any construction projects for Sigma Alpha Epsilon events — social or otherwise — must be completed by local, licensed professional contractors with proof of acceptable general-liability coverage and a written contract. Examples include, but are not limited to, construction of stages, structures of any kind, pools, slip-and-slides, pathways, rope bridges, any wooden structures meant to support a person, car demolitions, bounce houses, construction of mud bowls for football and construction of haunted houses. If you have a question as to whether an activity may fall within this prohibition, contact the Director of Risk Management. In addition, consumption of alcohol at these types of activities or events, even with professional, licensed construction, is strictly prohibited.
13. The Supreme Council recognizes the inherent danger of brain injuries from boxing. Accordingly, boxing tournaments, even for charity, are forbidden.
