Statement Regarding Chapter at Yale University

NEW HAVEN, CT – The Sigma Alpha Epsilon headquarters has received a memo from the Dean of Yale University to students regarding our Connecticut Omega chapter.

The incident took place last spring at a private chapter event, and university administrators did not notify the headquarters. However, when we learned about the incident, we immediately conducted an investigation to learn more details about what happened. Our investigation found that two members made inappropriate comments about a female student in the presence of other members. Their speech was not supported nor endorsed by other chapter members.

While these comments were isolated actions of those two men, we cannot validate what may have been said. Regardless, we absolutely expect our brothers to act as gentlemen at all times and do not condone demeaning or derogatory language. The headquarters imposed a number of sanctions on the chapter, including sexual-assault and harassment training for all members and required attendance at both regional and national leadership events. In addition, chapter members issued an apology to the campus community.

Any form of sexual assault, misconduct or harassment by anyone is unacceptable, and we will not tolerate actions that are inconsistent with our values. Their individual behavior deviates from our beliefs and should not reflect on other members, other chapters or other fraternity men. In addition, the members involved in the incident have since graduated and are no longer part of the chapter.

The organization prides itself on our creed, known as “The True Gentleman,” and we support education and training that combats sexual assault and sexual misconduct in our communities and holds our members accountable. Sigma Alpha Epsilon is also a sponsor for It’s on Us, the national initiative to fight sexual assault on campuses, and utilizes programming in the Fraternal Health & Safety Initiative at local and national events.
