Letter from the Executive Director

Dear Parents, Families and New Members,

Thank you for visiting our Sigma Alpha Epsilon website. We hope you’ll take a look around and learn more about our historic Fraternity, our mission and creed and the values we place on membership.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon was founded on March 9, 1856, at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa on the banks of the Black Warrior River. Now, more than 160 years later, we have 336,000 initiated members, nearly 240 active collegiate groups and more than 200 alumni associations across the country and in Canada.

Why have so many individuals chosen to become members of Sigma Alpha Epsilon? Each one probably has a different answer, but I believe the primary reasons include their ability to enjoy:

  • a lifetime experience of friendship and brotherhood
  • an opportunity to serve the community and fellow man
  • a commitment to high academic performance and personal standards
  • a value on the actions and behaviors of a gentleman and role model

Our membership experience at the collegiate level is a time for growth, maturation and introduction into the brotherhood. We use a health & safety guide titled Minerva’s Shield that covers our policies and expectations; we also provide education at our Leadership Schools, both regional and national; and we sponsor a hazing hotline for individuals to report any hazing concerns anonymously at 1-888-NOT-HAZE. In addition, Sigma Alpha Epsilon addresses these issues regularly in publications such as The Record and through our educational resources. Any questions about alcohol, hazing or health and safety can be directed to our staff at any time.

Membership is for life, and we believe in continuing education during the entire course of the colleigate tenure. We strive to prepare young men not just for their undergraduate years but also for the years beyond the walls of the host institution. Our belief is that when our members graduate, they will look back and realize they are a better man – a true gentleman – because of their undergraduate experience with Sigma Alpha Epsilon.

The Sigma Alpha Epsilon Foundation helps to further the mission of the Fraternity by encouraging academic excellence, leadership and community involvement. To support and advance the education of young men, the Foundation has established national scholarship funds which award more than $60,000 annually to our most accomplished brothers. In addition, the Foundation provides more than $250,000 each year in chapter specific scholarships through our 100+ Chapter Education Funds and makes available up to $10,000 in emergency student loans to each member. Finally, the Foundation equips our brothers with leadership skills by providing tuition scholarships and our annual grant to the John O. Moseley Leadership School.

The SAE Financial & Housing Corporation has a mission to build strong chapters by promoting safe, competitive and affordable fraternity housing through property-management resources and services. In addition, the board supports house corporations to become financially sound and ensures those volunteers are well-trained.

We are proud of the undergraduate mission of Sigma Alpha Epsilon as well as our alumni chapters, our educational programs and our community service. We hope you’ll explore our website to find additional information about our organization, chapters, Foundation, philanthropy, housing, events and programming.
